Frederick's does not carry stockings! How does Frederick's NOT carry stockings?
Here is how the conversation went down:
Me: I need a pair of nude stockings.
Clueless Girl (CG): The thigh highs are over here.
Me: I don't want thigh highs. I want stockings.
CG: Oh we don't carry those.
Me: Huh?? You carry Garter belts, right?
CG: Yes.
Me: But you don't carry anything to go with them??
CG: Well, if you wanted to you could wear the thigh highs with them.
Me: You have never worn thigh highs with a garter belt. I know this because if you had you wouldn't be suggesting it!!!!
Seriously, FREDERICK'S does not carry stockings!!!! Of all the things I have to search for, stockings was the last thing I would have guessed!

It's Vocabulary Lesson Time
Now listen up class and pay attention. Today we are going to learn a very important word!!!
Now that isn't so hard is it?? Evidently it is!
"Distinguished from things relating to church or religion". Secular does not mean we tolerate all kinds of religious ramblings. It means that we don't tolerate ANY kind of religious rambling. I don't preach to you about my gods. Don't preach to me about your God! And for Goddess sake, don't do it in an openly secular forum!!!
Okay, rant over. Thanks for playing!
secu·lar (sek′yə lər)
adjective
1. of or relating to worldly things as distinguished from things relating to church and religion; not sacred or religious; temporal; worldly

Holy Unwelcomed Visitor Batman!
I had the most unusual visitor today. I am so glad I was not here alone (Thank you Laura and Wendy, sorry you were so uncomfortable, that make's three of us!). So who was it you ask?
MY MOTHER and her husband!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They were in the area and decided to stop by and say hi.
She can't pick up a phone and call me. She can't be bothered by her grand children. She can't trust in my ability to make decent decisions (because hers is so stellar!). She just can't.
BUT, she can show up on my door step unannounced. I suppose I should be grateful that she made the gesture. Lord knows it is more than she has done since Grandma died. (That was July of '05 for those of you that want to know how long it has been since she bothered.)
She did, of course get in the obligatory guilt trip. After all, it wouldn't be a visit from my mother if some sort of guilt trip wasn't involved. If you are curious of my crime, I never call her or come see her. Gee, ya think! I don't subject my children to people who are un-accepting of them. And she has never been accepting of me... Oh, she was sure to mention that my brother came to see her yesterday. I simply don't understand why she doesn't just continue to pretend the embarrassment doesn't exist. (that would be me, btw)
Did I mention that I redyed Kyllian's hair last night and it is spiked today?? :D I am sure that made it into the 'disapproving' column. Oh well, it has good company. I am happy to spend time with Kyllian's spiked hair any day!

Pet Peeve Monday
Today's list is going to be very specific! LOL Aren't they all!
- People who are devoid of compasion
- Clothes that don't fit
- My children's shoes (seriously, is it really that hard to just put them away!)
- Dishes (I have been gone a HUGE chunk of this weekend. Between Friday and Sunday I ate at home twice. My kitchen looks like I just had a wild party!)
- Dishes (I felt it deserved a second entry, lol.)
- Running out of bookshelf space (I am almost maxed out and I have no idea where I can possibly fit another bookcase in my house!!! Perhaps this is a sign that I don't need anymore books? Nah...)
- Demanding AND indecisive clients (Be one or the other, that I can handle, both at the same time is ANNOYING!)
- The extreme lack of urgency on the part of South Seminole Hospital (Don't get sick in Longwood!!!)

The Universe Did Not Prepare Me for THIS!
First, a little background for those that need it...
As a struggling college student, desperate for a job closer to campus, I applied to be a receptionist. (For those of you laughing at the thought of me begin a receptionist... Shut the heck up! LOL!!) During my interview, they noticed that I knew sign language. I was asked if I would consider taking a position as a support staff in one of their group homes. Turns out they had a client with Cerebral Palsy that could not speak. They really needed someone in the home to develop a sign vocabulary for her. I was very reluctant to take the position. It was not anything I ever considered doing. Afterall, I was an anthropology major. I was going to school to work with long dead things; not living, breathing, needy people. I was asked to give it two weeks. If I hated it, he would give me the receptionist job. (Shut up, Eileen!) The rest is history and I spent the next 8 years working and managing behavior health and developmentally disabled group homes in Arizona and Florida. I have seen every major mental illness, and some not so well known. I have a deep understanding of psychotropic pharmacology. I can write a behavior mod plan better than any psychiatrist.
So when Kyllian began to show signs of bi-polar I told myself that, if this was indeed the case, I knew how to handle it. I really felt that that weird twist of events that lead me to a field that I NEVER would have considered myself even remotely qualified for, and one I ended up embracing and loving, was the universe preparing me for the future.
When the Dx became "official" (It technically isn't official. He is too young for that.) I was not worried. I was not upset. I am a bit more pragmatic than that. I knew what it meant to have bi-polar. I have worked very closely with a number of people with bi-polar disorder. Believe me, there are far worse psychiatric illnesses! I thought, "I am prepared for this. I know what is coming. We will get this straightened out and everything will be fine."
Now I have decided the universe is getting back at me for being over confident!
Okay, I don't actually think the universe is conspiring against me but man it does feel like it some days.
The biggest difference in working in group homes and having a child with bi-polar is that in group homes you get time off. You work your 8, 10, 12 or 16 hour shift and then you go home, presumably to psychologically "normal" people. That is not the case when your are talking about your own child. I am his 24/7 care giver. Day in, day out, I am the one that deals with the roller coaster that is Kyllian's emotions, the extreme ADD, the anger outbursts and the oppositional fits. Now I am not saying K doesn't help. He does! But he doesn't get home until 7pm most nights. Kyllian goes NON-STOP from the time he wakes up until his medication knocks him out at night, especially when he is in a manic phase, which he almost always is.
Also don't mistake my little rant for me saying I wish Kyllian was any different. Kyllian is who Kyllian is supposed to be. I do believe he has a destiny that only he can fulfill. He is such a wonderful little boy. He has such an unusual outlook on the world. It is as if his soul is brand new, not tainted or biased by any past experiences. He knows no fear. (except spiders! ;) ) He accepts all people and views everyone as a friend until they prove otherwise. And even then he feels they deserve a second chance and sometimes a third or fourth. (Although at the same time, he has been known to hold quite the grudge!) He is painfully aware of everything around him. He notices details that I can only hope to notice. He remembers events and people with strong emotion, both good and bad. He can become completely lost in the world around him. And become very connected with the world as well, even though connecting with people is more difficult for him. In general, people have normal barriers that Kyllian can't even comprehend. If he has ever sat next to you, you will know that the concept of personal space is one of them!
It is precisely all of these wonderful characteristics that also makes living with Kyllian a very physically, mentally and emotionally draining experience at times. As you can tell by Thursday's blog post, we are in the midst of those times currently. I know it will pass and things will level out again but it is really hard to remember that at the top of a manic swing!
If you have managed to make it this far, I thank you!! So if I look like I have been beating my head against a wall lately, you know why! LOL If you see me wandering around Walmart aimlessly at midnight just so I can get out of the house (man I need a life! LOL), you know why. If you drop by at 4 in the afternoon and I am half way through the bottle of Merlot, you know why!
I was wrong! The universe most definitely did not prepare me for this.

Random Rants from our trip
other than the most obvious of course! :(
The ENTIRE state of Georgia is under construction.
Traffic in New York is a nightmare. (DUH)
My husband got a ticket! (I can't be too irritated though because if I was driving I probably would have been speeding also. However it now would have been cheaper for us to fly to Cape Cod instead of drive.)
It is a LOOONNNGGGG way to Cape Cod.
The roads up north are weird.
They are toll happy up there. I will never complain about the Lake Jessup toll plaza again.
I HATE bridges. This really is a phobia I should get over!
And the biggest rant of them all... Why do priests try to sell people on the kindness and justness of God while the father of three small children has just died for absolutely no reason? No reason what so ever yet this is somehow a kind and just act???? Okay, time to end this rant before it goes ugly! :)

Child Obesity = Bad Parenting
This is a reply to someone arguing the above.
I think it is unwise to assume bad parenting without knowing the whole story.
Many children are fed by the state (breakfast and lunch in school) and no one is accusing them of abuse even though they provide more food to these children than many of the parents do.
The schools take away physical activity, push sweets as rewards, give so much homework there is no play time after school.
The marketing people teach children and parents what is healthy. "Snack foods" and "Junk foods" are marketed as healthy. "Low fat", "High Protein", "Whole Grain", "Heart Healthy"
Then there are the growing number of children with sensory problems and those on medications that affect weight.
It isn't safe to let kids "run the streets" like we did so if you can't afford or don't have the time for organized activities then it is a challenge to get regular activity.
It is widely know that stress affects weight, I have yet to hear anyone mention how stressed kids are nowadays. Be better in school, play an instrument, play a sport, volunteer, etc. Kids are over worked and under played. They have no outlet for their stress.
People have grown up thinking the food pyramid is healthy. That is what they were taught. They are using the knowledge they were given. Not everyone knows the information is bad. They are uninformed. They are doing the best with what they have.
Before the government starts blaming parents for the childhood obesity epidemic they should take a look in the mirror and realize that they laid the foundation by, among other things, allowing food companies to have input on Health campaigns, taking PE and recess out of the school and allowing deceptive marketing and research practices.
I think the obesity epidemic is a result of a bunch of small societal changes ranging from the structure of the school system, misleading marketing, environmental changes, performance expectations of children. They all work together to build the problem.
Assuming the world is full of parents that allow their children to drown themselves in Oreo cookies is not the answer.
I have a child who is considered overweight and I would be livid if someone accused me of being a bad parent without knowing the problems and trials my son goes through everyday.
TBH, I think blaming childhood obesity on bad parenting is no better than blaming autism on bad parenting. Unfortunately I have experience in both realms.

My dog must be missing something in her diet!!
My dog will eat/chew on anything. I know a lot of people say that but I wonder if they have a dog that chews on neoprene coated weights, the sliding glass door and, the newest one, a kettlebell.
Seriously, explain to me how it can even remotely be interesting to chew on a cast iron ball with a handle that has been coated in enamel? That crazy dog even managed to leave teeth marks in the darn thing!

And may I just add...
...to my rant from the other day.
If homeschoolers want to be included in EVERY single blessed competition that is offered to public and private schooled students then we need to start allowing every public and private schooled students to enter every contest that is offered to homeschooled students!
It is only fair, right??
I don't know why I am always so amazed at how personal people take things. Get over it people. Life isn't fair!

Don't be so touchy!
So Subway is having a contest and homeschoolers are up in arms because the contest specifically excludes "homeschools". First all, this business about discrimination, that all these homeschoolers feel, really irritates me. Get over it!
I wonder if any of the overly sensitive complainers happened to notice that the prize is intended for the betterment of an institutional type school. Sure, the "actual" winner gets a personal prize, as do the runner-ups, but the BIG prize is $5000 worth of athletic equipment for the winner's school. The winner wins prizes for THEIR SCHOOL! I think it is completely acceptable to define who the eligible institutions are.
Are there actually homeschoolers out there that are so concerned about "fairness" that they would expect Subway to furnish their backyard with $5000 worth of play equipment?? IMO, It would be far more "unfair" to award $5000 worth of equipment to one family when the intention was to help out a entire school.
And for those that argue that they could put a stipulation that if a homeschool wins, the prize would go to the local school instead...well, that's just mean. "Well Johny, I know you won the grand prize and your story totally rocked but you aren't allowed to ever play with your prize because we are sending it to the local school which you don't attend. Sucks to be you! But you will make a great writer some day." I suppose it would be and excellent "Life is not fair lesson" for those who feel like their homeschooler was missing out on that part of public school!
Seriously people!
